Laura Trott MP

This month, I joined the celebrations across our community to commemorate eighty years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day - a moment of collective relief and jubilation after a devastating conflict. This anniversary was a poignant milestone and a chance for us to thank again the veterans that live amongst us for the huge sacrifices they made for the freedoms we benefit from today.

In the afternoon, I had the pleasure of joining an excellent afternoon tea in Swanley, where it was incredible to speak to veterans and their families about their memories. One of the attendees was Len, a 100-year-old RAF veteran who was former wireless operator air gunner - an amazing man who it was a privilege to meet and talk to.

In the evening, I then joined the celebrations at the Sevenoaks Vine, where bands were performing, alongside a ceremony of remembrance and the lighting of the beacon – which symbolised the 'light of peace' that emerged from the darkness of war.

My thanks go out to the organisers of both events. It is a huge challenge to ensure that everything runs smoothly, but Swanley Town Council and Sevenoaks Town Council did a fabulous job.

Other events were also organised throughout our community, and a huge thanks to those who organised those commemorations, as of course to everyone who joined the celebrations and ensured this important day was observed with the respect it deserves. By engaging in these commemorations, we not only honour those who served but also reaffirm our commitment to the values they fought to protect.

As ever, if you wish to discuss anything with me, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me at [email protected].
